Richard Milhous Nixon was the United States’ 37th president. He was born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913.
His parents were Francis Anthony and Hannah Milhous Nixon. Richard’s father had six years of schooling. He also owned a lemon grove in Yorba Linda. Arthur, Richard’s brother, died when Richard was seven years old.
The Nixon family had members that were in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The Nixon family were Quakers. They did not believe in war. In 1922, they moved to Whittier, California. Young Richard was nine then.
He was smart at a young age. He would read newspapers and study politics. Nixon was always a hard worker.
Richard attended public schools when he was young. At age seventeen, Nixon went to Whittier College. In 1924, he had to turn down an offer from Harvard College because of the Great Depression. Later, he received recommendations to Duke University and was accepted. He also sang in the college Glee Club and excelled in his debate classes. Richard graduated with honors. He enlisted in the Navy and then set sail from Iowa.
Nixon served as Vice President under Dwight D. Eisonhower from 1953 to 1961. He toured the country speaking on Republican views. He tried to earn campaign money for his political party. Richard Nixon left other matters to H.R. Halderman and John Erlichman. Before he was Vice President, Richard was a senator for the state of California. He was the youngest senator at the age of thirty-eight. He was inaugurated in 1969.
Richard married Thelma Catherine Ryan. She helped him in office as well. They lived in San Clemente.
He was also a very good speaker. Richard talked of peace and tried to maintain it in Italy at that time. Richard Nixon spoke about differences between the United States and foreign countries. Nixon also requested better urban transportation, a raise in social security benefits, and adopted a stout stance toward the education, economy, and social equality amongst fellow African Americans. A bill was passed ( the Twenty-sixth Amendment) in 1971 that allowed people to vote at the age of twenty-one instead of eighteen.
He accomplished a high respect for voters and gave time to talk to people about peace. Nixon contributed effort to our country by lying and breaking rules.
His second term election was won by one of the largest margins ever recorded. Watergate effected President Nixon’s career. People of the Republican Party broke into the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Bugged phones and wired rooms were discovered. He was eligible for impeachment because he too was accused of wrong-doing.
Nixon once said.”?we are entering an area of negotiation?” He died April 22, 1994 in San Clemente.
