The Secretary of State is the Chief Elections Officer of the State. Also they appoint county boards of elections and supervise their activities. One of the major jobs for the person who takes office is to redraw the district lines after the census in the year 2000. The two candidates for this position are Kenneth Blackwell the republican and Charleta Tavares a democrat. Both of these candidates have had previous experience in Ohio politics. Blackwell was previously the Ohio State Treasurer. Blackwell graduated from Xavier University with a Masters of Education degree. Tavares was a State Representative from the 22nd district. Her college degree came from the Ohio State University and Spelman College.

These two candidates both pledged to the Institute of Global Ethics that they would run ethical campaigns. Just a few weeks ago we had the chance to hear Blackwell speak at Ohio Union. This experience made the race for Secretary of State more personal. We both feel that Ken Blackwell is educated, honest, enthusiastic, dedicated, open minded, fair, law abiding, and most of all he has good morals. Another quality that Ken Blackwell has is that he is a good public speaker.

Charleta Tavares is the democratic candidate for Secretary of State. After checking into her background we believe that she is another candidate who fits our requirements for an ethical candidate. Tavares is educated, experienced, honest, dedicated, enthusiastic, and she has obtainable goals.

After reviewing the race for Secretary of State Karen and I have decided that if we were able to vote Ken Blackwell would receive our vote. One major factor was the fact that we saw him speak just a few weeks ago. Another factor was that he has had numerous years of experience at places such as U.S. ambassador, mayor, and was on the U.S. department of Housing and Urban development.
