There are two opposite points of view to this problem. One side suggests not to place any cods on speech on campuses of college institutions and another side strongly believes that speech must be protected by law. Mrs. Jennifer Kelley is following position of free speech in the article called Speech Codes Should Not Be Permitted on Campuses. In her writings she argues that by preventing words we would not change some people s bad behavior and actions. One of her other points was that by taking away hate speech we would also take away the right to response to that speech. Mr. Charles Lawrence goes completely opposite direction in his article Racist Speech Should Be restricted on College Campuses. He discusses the whole issue of the discrimination of the minority groups on campuses. Mr. Lawrence also writes that by protecting bad speech from government regulation, we are forced to combat it as community. His other arguments were that freedom of speech is, and always will be in conflict with the elimination of racism. Hi is afraid that minority groups will be likely to loose if they try to fight back the offensive speech. They will rather stay silent. Mr. Lawrence s main argument is that the First Amendment makes an enormous harm to the victims of racist speech.
