The other night I spent my night at home babysitting my six year old cousin Fred. As usual I found Fred in front of the television watching the program “Cops”. I had no problem watching it, Fred however, was a little confused by some of the graphic instances that took place. There was one segment that involved the stabbing of a prostitute. This caused some confusion in the young mind of Fred. First, he wanted to now what a prostitute was. That was a subject that I wasn t going to get into with him. Next he wanted to know why she was stabbed. Then question after question was fired at me like bullets from a machine gun. There was one question that made me realize how much programs like Cops take away from a child’s innocence; “Does stuff like that happen around here?” Fred was worrying about things no six year old had the right to fear. From watching the television show “Cops”, Fred got a lesson in life. He learned how corrupt real life can be, and was in fear of the evils that unfortunatly occur everyday.
