Carpe Diem; seize the day capture it by the ears. Dead poets society the movie focuses on this phrase. Suck the marrow out of life according to Mr. Keaton this phrase meant to not ever let a day pass with out you. Problems such as death of a student Neil Perry, the expulsion and Keaton fired were all the bad things that happened because of carpe diem. There were some good things such as Todd learning to speak publicly, and Knox tried harder to get the girl of his dreams Chris who as it happens was dating the head football player.
Neil Perry the main character in the film was under his fathers thumb because of the way his father treated him and didn t believe that any could rule his own life and make changes. Neil wanted to be an actor and it his father wouldn t let him, so it was clear that he had to do it behind his fathers back. The lead part in the school play was given to Neil. He participated in it behind his fathers back. At the auditorium, during the play Neil s father showed up. Neil went home with his father because Mr. Perry had withdrawn Neil from school. Later that night the two had argued this was a factor leading to Neil s suicide.
The dead poet society had some more problems since the death of a dear friend such as the expulsion of Newanda and the dismissal of Mr. Keaton. Newanda was a radical student who didn t like the idea of an all school boarding school and let it be known all over so that he would get expelled. A phone rang in the auditorium while the dean was giving a speech, it was Newanda on the other line telling them that god thought they should have girls at their school, for this reason Newanda was given a thrashing. Although this wasn t a good idea he still was not expelled it was later in the movie he was expelled when he gave Cameron a bloody nose for ratting the Dead Poet Society and Mr. Keaton out.
