Learner-Centered Instruction Essay, Research Paper
The use of higher order thinking skills, teaching in layers, and the use of an action
flow lesson plan are important factors in the implementation of
learner-centered instruction in the classroom.
A teacher must use higher order thinking skills (HOTS) to get the students to
move past the knowledge, comprehension, and application phases and on to
the analysis, synthesis, and evaluative phases. It is in these phases that students
are challenged mentally, and therefore learner-centered instruction is taking
place. Through the student becoming proficient in the HOTS the student should
be able to achieve a higher cognitive level of thinking.
Teaching in layers allows for repetition, which is important in implementing
learner-centered instruction, in that it is easier for the student to learn a
particular concept. For instance, a teacher using the strategy of truths will be
able to repeat time and again, when relevant, a truth of life. This repetition is
important in student learning in that they are not pressured to learn something
immediately but are able to develop this learning over time (learner-centered).
The use of an action flow lesson plan will support learner-centered
instruction in that it uses many high involvement activities in order for the class to
proceed smoothly, interestingly, and with much student involvement. Also, the
use of an action flow lesson plan allows student to naturally get involved in
learning, without needing threats or rewards.
The implementation of higher order thinking skills, teaching in layers, and
the use of an action flow lesson plan are all instrumental in learner-centered
instruction.
