AUSTRIAN AVALANCHES
Recently deadly avalanches have occurred and are still occuring in austria and Central Europe. Who’s to blame, the antithesis of El Nino or La Nina? Snow storms that usually occur in Scandinavia, have moved further south to Central Europe.
These avalanches started during the week of Feburary 22 to the 26. The avalanche was about a kilometre long and 50 metres wide. During this period of time there were helicopters that came into towns of the surrounding areas of the Austrian Alps. The avanlanches that occurred in Gaulter were the worst to strike Central Europe this winter.
Tens of thousands of travelers have been stranded in train station, and airports across the isolated towns across Austrian, Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany, as avalanches covered roads and railroads. Austrian rescue flights by the army, interior ministry and auto club were reinforced by helicopters from the Greman army and the U.S. Army bases in Germany.
Austria mourned the 38 victims of the avalanches on Sunday Feburary 28, 1999. Sunday was declared a day of mourning
