A disastrous, wicked, and shameful story of the vengeance of a teen are the only descriptions for this story. The Crucible, by Author Miller a play about a vengeful teen who accuses her rival of witchcraft. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692 when anything can spark a fear. When a group of girls start accusing some of the population of Salem of witchcraft, the
remaining townspeople become afraid and can only agree with them. During the time period this story took place, fear was high and when an accusation as huge as witchcraft is heard, the people have no choice but to believe the accusation. John Proctor is a farmer is his mid-thirties, and is
one of the characters who becomes feared. He has almost signed his own death warrant, by committed sins which are recognized by the community. Some of the sins include not attending church, tending to his crops on Sundays, and committing adultery. John Proctor is a independent man, who is loyal to his family, but has been adulterous in his past. John Proctor has been characterized Independent, only because of his Independent actions. In
Act One, he independently went to Rev. Parris house to fetch his servant Mary Warren, he could have asked his wife or sons to accompany him but does not. Also in act one he attacked the Puntnam s without any help, all on his own. Proctor seems to run his own life and run his family by himself. In act three when he goes on trial, he is accused of tending to his farm. But the fact is
that he tends his farm by himself. He never asks his wife, or sons which other farmers do. He is an independent man, who seems to not take advantage of his situation with probably strong boys to help him with the chores that have to be done or to fetch his servant when she is missing. Not only is John Proctor independent, but he is also a loyal man to his family. In act two when
he is accused of defying god by working on the farm on Sundays, he pleads that he does it not only because of his dissent to Parris but to get work done to help his family. In act three when Proctor goes on trial, and is accused of being a witch and of being adulterous, he remains loyal by not confessing and tarnishing his name and his family s reputation. The final example of Proctor
being loyal is when he is asked to turn in his friends and confess and to live. He does not and is hanged, but he is loyal to friends and doesn t turn them in. Plus he does not turn his wife in, and remains loyal to her until his death.
John Proctor s final characteristic is his Adulterous behavior. In Act two Elizabeth, his wife, and him argue because he has committed adultery against her. He has committed adultery with Abigail, their former servant, and that is the main reason Elizabeth fired her, even though she claims it was because she was not working hard. The adultery is revealed in Appendix, Act two
scene two which was taken out of the play. But in this scene Proctor goes to Abigail and tries to get her to confess that she is a liar and is making the whole witch hunt up and that Elizabeth is not a with. She does not but she does remind Proctor of there adulterous relationship and how shewants him back. The final example of his adultery is when he is forced to confess the adultery to the court, but denies the accusations. John Proctor has proved to be an independent man, who is loyal to his family, but has an
adulterous past. In a time of witch hunts, and foolish stories, many things go hay wire as with the story of John Proctor which is a sad story. The quality of being independent was achieved by Proctor working by himself, and doing errands by himself and not bothering to ask anyone else. Proctor is loyal and has proved this quality by not turning in his friends and not tarnishing his reputation to save his farm and kids. He is then hung which makes this quality his best and most rewarding. However his worst quality is his being adulterous, which he proved by admitting to his wife that he slept with their former servant Abigail. Now Proctor is a good man, but he lets his qualities take the best of him, and sometimes they help him out, but other times they just leave him hanging.
