On October 23, Heather Garcia came to our communications class to talk about her experiences working in the field of communications. Ms. Garcia is originally from San Diego, California, and is class of 1998 graduate of Western Kentucky University.

Heather Garcia currently works for a small public relations firm called the Maverick Group. The purpose of a public relations firm is basically to get the word out about its clients to the media, and/or to get free publicity. Ms. Garcia discussed two of her firms clients, Farmers Market, and Service Merchandise. In their dealings with the Farmers Market, the firm had to work with a very small budget with which they mostly on low-budget signs, they also called news stations, and asked for them to plugs during the newscasts. Representatives also appeared on community shows several times. Service Merchandise had a much larger budget then the Farmers Market, and with it Ms. Garcia s firm came up with all kinds of promotions for their Extreme Jewelry shows, including sending out fancy invitations to preferred customer, and making fancy, expensive signs.

Ms Garcia also gave our class some advice about making it out the work world. She suggested that we start sending out our resumes at least three months before we graduate, and get as many internships as possible. She also said that the key to making in the field of public relations is make good relationships, make things perfect, do your best to impress people, and be prepared. Overall, Ms. Garcia s presentation was very interesting.
