Skinny Against Fat! Essay, Research Paper
to their being a couch potato. On the other hand, people who incorporate physical activity
into their daily lives can be considered an exerciser.
With today?s technology it is very easy for a person to become a couch potato.
Many occupations, including going to school, involve hours of sitting. People drive
everywhere, ride elevators, and hire others to do physical work around the home. It
seems that everything is automated and requires little energy from a person body. For
example, a remote control for the television allows you to sit where you are and only
move one finger. You can order and pickup food without ever getting out of your car.
On the other hand, did you realize that anything you do when you are not sitting or
lying down is a physical activity? By just being active within your daily routine, you are
considered an exerciser. An exerciser would use the stairs in place of the elevator or walk
instead of drive whenever possible. They would always be active within their workspace.
For instance, a trip to the copy machine or just standing and stretching will help burn
calories. Many exercisers take a walk during their lunch hour to get exercise and to eat
less food.
A couch potato?s recreational activities are usually sedentary. A comfortable
couch, your favorite movie, and a large bag of chips with dip several nights a week. Does
this sound familiar? This is the most common form of recreation for a couch potato.
Other activities may include, using your computer, reading, and talking on the telephone.
Not only are these sedentary activities, but the couch potato will probably want to snack
while doing these activities and will most likely become overweight. It is common for a
couch potato to be bored which stimulates eating. Watching television and snacking are
emotional comforts to a couch potato. Generally snacks that are junky or unhealthy are
convenient and taste good. A quick trip to the refrigerator after seeing an advertisement
on television for ice cream bars is very typical.
However, an exerciser enjoys activities such as, taking a walk with a friend, going
dancing, or just working in their garden. By doing these activities it causes natural deep
breathing rhythms which can relieve stress and tension. To be more intense, the exerciser
might join a health club so he or she can workout on a regular schedule. Exercising
usually curbs the appetite, therefore an exerciser will more than likely loose weight. An
exerciser is generally less bored because they have mental and physical harmony. More
than likely they will snack less because they are so active. It is difficult to eat snacks while
working in the garden or while mowing the lawn. Because an exerciser feels better, they
will usually feed their body healthier foods. Most snacking will consist of fruits and raw
vegetables.
In conclusion, a person does not necessarily choose to become a couch potato, it
just happens over time. Because a large portion of a persons waking hours are spent in
sedentary activities one needs to make a special effort to incorporate physical exercise into
their daily routine. In other words, if you don?t want to become a couch potato then you
better get up out of that chair and begin some physical activity! As for an exerciser, it will
always be necessary to incorporate physical activity into their daily life in order to
continue to stay healthy. to their being a couch potato. On the other hand, people who incorporate physical activity
