Faith Essay, Research Paper
Faith can be interpreted in various ways. One may rely on fate to help them succeed in life and to help them find true love. Yet one may have faith in God and let that faith bring them success in life. In the Poems Bloody Men by Wendy Cope and Easter Wings by George Herbert, the difficulties as well as the rewards of faith are discussed.
The poem Bloody Men by Wendy Cope speaks of faith through relationships. The poem is from a woman s point of view and discusses the difficulties and rewards of faith in relationships. She uses a simile to describe men when she says bloody men are like bloody buses . She views men in a negative way and says how they never come at the right moment in life. Cope describes the beginning of relationships as a time when men want to show off what they have to impress women. You look at them flashing their indicators, offering you a ride . The author emphasizes on the fact that relationships are all about faith and the right timing. She says that many men can come at once and you have to choose the right man who you will make you happy. You re trying to read the destinations you haven t much time to decide . Like a bus, you have to make a decision quickly before you lose your opportunity. The author compares relationships to buses, if you get on the right bus it s fate meaning, if you pick the right man you will be satisfied and love will fulfill you. If you make the wrong decision and chose the wrong man then you ll end up feeling regret for yourself and you will be disappointed. The author describes relationships as a leap of faith because you never know if you are getting on the right or wrong bus. It is like choosing the right path in a fork in the road. Choosing the wrong path, will lead to disappointments in life. The author expresses these disappointment in life by saying, Jump off, and you ll stand there and gaze while the cars and the taxies and lorries go by and the minutes, the hours, the days. In reality, the author is saying how the difficulties and rewards in life do not depend upon our decisions and our ability to evaluate things, but on fate and the role it plays in every individual s life.
The poem, Easter Wings speaks of mans imperfections and mans set path in life. The author, George Herbert, describes the decay of mankind as a gradual process throughout the evolution of time. The poem describes how man was created to be wealthy, but because of mans own actions this wealth was lost. Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store, Though foolishly he lost the same, Decaying more and more Till he became most poor. God creates man in abundance and wealth and due to their sins they lost everything. By disobeying God, man has suffered the consequences. We are not the only people who have been punished by God, Adam and Eve was the first to disobey God and lose everything. Due to Adam and Eve s sins, all people were born as sinners. Mankind has learnt from Adam and Eve s sin that one should never disobey God because if one does, then they will be punished. My tender age in sorrow did begin; And still with sickness and shame Thou didst do punish sin .The speaker in the poem wants to praise Gods victories and wants to thank God for punishing those who have sinned because in life one must gain strength from their mistakes. With thee let me combine, and feel this day thy victory; for, if I imp my wing on thine, affliction shall advance the flight in me. The speaker thanks God for having punished Adam an Eve because without the fall of mankind one could not have learnt how to survive because their fate would have already been determined for them.
The difficulties and rewards of faith are described in two very different ways in the poems Easter Wings and Bloody Men . The poem Bloody Men talks about faith in relationships by comparing men to buses. As well as how one must rely on fate to find the perfect man in order to be happy in life and how one should not hesitate when faced with the decision. You re trying to read the destinations, you haven t much time to decide. If you make a mistake, there is no turning back. By relying on fate and making the right choice, you will be very happy in life. Yet, the poem Easter Wings talks about having faith in God and if one disobeys God there will be many consequences to be suffered. Adam and Eve were used as an example for what happens to people when one disobeys Gods orders. Though foolishly he lost the same, Decaying more and more Till he became most poor. The difficulties in faith are apparent in both poems when one is faced with the decision of which road to choose in life as well as when one disobeys God and must face the consequences of their actions. The rewards of faith are portrayed in the poems when one chooses the path in life therefore leading them to be happy in life as well as when one follows God s orders which will enable them to lead a wealthy life. These two poems deal with faiths abilities to enable people to lead happy lives by allowing fate to control their lives.
