Flowers for Algernon
? Friendship?
In the story Flowers for Algernon, Danial Keye?s main character struggles with
friendships. He is very unintelligent and had poor judgment in choosing the right
friends. In the story he is miss guided into whether some of his friends were truly
friends. Some people used him to amuse themselves as they are embarrassing him. He
needs to know whether he has true friends or not.
The people that Charley thought were his friends before he got smart was Joe
and Frank and the other people at work. After Charley had the surgery he understood
that the men at the men at the factory treated him cruelly. Before the surgery
Charley did not have the intelligence to tell that they would get him drunk and
dis-respect him. The men at the factory thought he was stupid and if someone did
something stupid they would call him a ?Charley Gordon? witch is the main character
in the book. Although he did not understand it was highly insulting for people to
hear that. After Charley had the operation the guys at the factory either got
intimidated or ashamed because Charley was much smarter than them and Charley
finally understood that he was treated evilly and the guys at the factory signed a
petition saying he that he could not work there anymore. When Charley went back to
his original intelligence, some people had a lot more respect for him.
