1. Archetype Identification-Water vs. desert Passage-Ch.1, p.3,4. ?In water cut gullies theearth dusted down in dry little streams. The finest dust did not settle to earth but wentinto the sky.? Interpretation- This archetype symbolizes the death of the society that wasknown in Oklahoma. It shows the cycle of life and the effect on Oklahoma..

2. Archetype Identification- Golden corn. – Passage-Ch. 1, p.5. ?The wind had pummeleddown the fallen corn.? Interpretation- The corn is the wealth and life blood of theinhabitants, without the corn no one will survive in their current location.

3. Archetype Identification- Outcast.-Passage-Ch.2, p. 18. ?Tom was put in prison for hiscrimes and the trucker knows he is an ex con and treats him with less respect.?Interpretation- Tom is an outcast from society letting him think and reflect on his actions,allowing him to see things the way they are. This is a quality often found in heroes.

4. Archetype Identification.- Task.- Passage- Ch. 3, p. 19. ? The turtle is going southwardacross the road. One car avoids the turtle and another tries to hit the turtle.? The turtledoes not stop for any reason and continues to peruse it?s goal.? Interpretation- Thisshows the simple stubbornness that people and things will do to reach their goals. Thispassage also shows the two major types of people, those trying to prevent them fromreaching their goal and those who do every thing they can to help another person.

5. Archetype Identification.- Rebirth.-Passage-Ch. 3, p. 20. ? As the turtle gets away fromit?s encounter with the cars it plants seeds.? Interpretation- The rebirth grows from theturtle?s near death. it continues the cycle of life by planting seeds that will blossom andjoin the current trend of life.

6. Archetype Identification.- Red.-Passage-Ch. 3, p. 20. ? A red ant penetrates the shell ofthe turtle and bites him.? Interpretation-The turtle and the ant show that nothing isimmune to death and new wounds, no matter how thick your shell is because no one isimpenetrable to everything.

7. Archetype Identification.- Trees.-Passage-Ch. 4,p. 24. ? Tom Joad moved into theimperfect shade of the lone tree.? Interpretation- The lone tree of knowledge standscasting imperfect shade, this shows that knowledge is scattered and all is not gathered atone time, Tom learns under the tree with Jim Casey.

8. Archetype Identification-Golden.-Passage-Ch. 4,p.25. ? The description of reverendCasey speaks of his eyes flecked with gold.? Interpretation.-This reveals that the reverendCasey speaks only the truth and has a life with flecks of majesty. He is not perfect butsees man as part of an over soul so all actions of man are beautiful so one cannot sin.

9. Archetype Identification-Creature of Nightmare.-Passage-Ch. 5, p.45. ? The giant stubnosed cat pushes its way through houses and fences making perfectly straight lines.?Interpretation. The creature is the mechanical tractor that can do several men?s workmuch faster. This machine makes more profit, so it destroys the farmers. It then pushestheir houses over and destroys all remnants of those who once lived there.

Archetype Identification-The battle between good and evil. -Passage-Ch.5, p. 45.?The farmers are pushed off the land that they made by profit hungry banks.?Interpretation- The farmers are the under dogs to the large companies that relentlesslysqueeze the farms to make more money. The farmers then plant only one crop and do notrotate thus they destroy the fertile soil.

11. Archetype Identification- Red Light.-Passage-Ch.6, p.57 . ?The red sun touched thehorizon and spread out like a jelly fish and the sky above it seemed much brighter andmore alive than it had been. Interpretation- The red sun light that spreads and shows achange brewing and that the change will spread rapidly. The light being red is anoxymoron because light means good things ,but red shows negative things so the changewill be for the worse.

12. Archetype Identification-Crescent Moon.- Passage- Ch.8, p. 86. ?The sky grayedamong the stars and the pale late quarter moon was insubstantial and thin.? Interpretation-The pale crescent moon shows change is far away and it will take a long time to get to thenew cycle in the moon, so times will be bad for quite some time.

Archetype Identification-Earth Mother.-Passage- Ch.8, p. 95. ?Ma is described ashaving eyes that have experienced all possible tragedy and to have had to have mountedpain and suffering likes steps to a high calm and has a superhuman understanding.?Interpretation- This shows Ma is the strong one in the family who takes care of everything and always remains cool. She is the care giver and nurturer of the family

14.Archetype Identification- Star crossed lovers.-Passage-Ch. 8, p. 100. ? Grandma andGrandpa are constantly bickering among each other they try to make each other nuts.Once grandma shot grandpa.? Interpretation- the two grandparents are extremely closebut they thrive on arguing with each other. When grandpa dies it makes grandma diebecause she can not live with out her husband.

15.Archetype Identification-The Quest.-Passage-Ch.9 , p.113. ?To California or any otherplace everyone a drum major leading a parade of hurts, marching with our bitterness.?Interpretation-The people are on a quest to escape the pain that they have found so theytake flight to avoid the problems that they are faced with. They have a great hope offinding a land of milk and honey in which they can thrive.

16.Archetype Identification- Outcast Passage-Ch.12, p.154. ? There ain?t room enoughfor both of us, your kind and my kind, the rich and the poor in this here country.?Interpretation.-The poor are the outcast of society and the rich do every thing within theirpower from keeping the poor from rising up.

17. Archetype Identification- Journey. Passage- Ch.12, p. 151-154. ?The Joads aretraveling across the country very slowly trying to get to California? Interpretation. -Route,66 is the comforting path that will guide them to their destination. The Joads slowlybecome people of the road, making travel part of their lifestyle.

18. Archetype Identification- Battle of good vs. evil.-Passage- Ch.13, p.165. ?The manpumping gas has the analogy of the gilla monster that bites and does not ever let go.?Interpretation.-The gilla monster represents the evil of the banks that sucks the life out ofthe inhabitants by relentlessly clamping on to them and slowly administrating their poison.

19 Archetype Identification- Nature vs. Mechanistic world.-Passage-Ch. 14, p.192-195.?The farmer who works the land with his hands is forced to travel on to California becausetractors work the land faster, so they destroy the farmers.? Interpretation- Themechanistic tractor intimidates the farmers so they flee their land seeking refuge of a betterlife. The tractors are supported by societies need to have greater profits.

20. Archetype Identification- Three.-Passage-Ch. 15,page 208. ? The number threemachine is the only one anyone plays.? Interpretation.- This shows the cycle of life in anobscured manner by showing the stages of being born, living and dying.

21. Archetype Identification- Sun. Passage- Ch. 16, Pg. 211. ?The sun is beating downon the Joads, it is making them weak and sick in the truck.? Interpretation-The sunrepresents fire which is transforming the Joads who are turning into different people thanthey were at their home. They are slowly changing into something completely different.

22. Archetype Identification- The ritual Passage Ch. 17, Pg. 254-255 ? The boys havea ritual of talking about gold and becoming new friends. The men always ask aboutwater.? Interpretation.-These ritual put everyone in their place in the traveling camps therituals are the same for each family. These rituals make living on the road more likehome.

23. Archetype Identification-The unhealable wound.- Passage-Ch. 18, p. 295 ?The deathof John Joad?s wife plagues him with guilt and he becomes reclusive and has great moodswings.? Interpretation-The death of his wife leaves him with the deep sorrow of knowinghe killed her. He goes on drinking spells where he will consume great amounts of liquor,he also sometimes eats a great deal of food all at once then will not eat again for weeks.

24. Archetype identification -Creature of nightmare.- Passage-Ch19, p. 204. ? The policeman accompanies the man finding people to work for him . The sheriff abuses his powersand shoots an innocent woman.? Interpretation- The sheriff is the extension of the evil ofthe banks. The banks feel the only way to control the poor is by fear tactics. They feelthat if the poor are afraid of the police and afraid of dying of hunger they will do whateverthey are told to do.

25. Archetype Identification-Loyal retainer.-Passage-Ch. 20, p. 240. ? Casey lets thepolice arrest him for what Tom did. So Tom can stay out of trouble.? Interpretation-Casey is protecting Tom because Tom is more important to the family. Casey sees this sohe feels he must protect Tom.

26. Archetype Identification- Battle between good and evil.-Passage- Ch. 21, p. 363.?The native Californians do not like the okies and they fear them because they are debtless men who will work for almost nothing.? Interpretation. -The evil has worked it?s wayto everyone. The clerks and farmers are convinced that the okies are the root of all thereproblems. So the Californians make up groups to wipe out the immigrants. They usemoney that could be used to pay wages to stir up more trouble with the okies.

27. Archetype Identification- Paradise- Passage-Ch. 22, p. 409. ? The Joads have foundthe government camp, there it is nicer than anything they have ever lived in before.?Interpretation.- In this place they find refuge from the police and a place where nothingcan hurt them.

28. Archetype Identification- Valleys.-Passage-Ch. 25, p. 445. ? Valleys in which the fruitblossoms are the first tendrils of the grapes.? Interpretation.-California is one giantvalley, thus it represents a type of hell for the immigrants they are forced to live likeanimals and work for pitiful wages. These things add up and the grapes of wrath fermentmaking a very pungent wine.

29. Archetype Identification- Man from the provinces.-Passage-Ch. 26, p. 443. ? JimCasey has returned from prison and sees what needs to be done to solve the workersproblems.? Interpretation Jim Casey represents the problem solver in the book, he hasbeen away from the problems long enough that he can see them in a whole new light, hesee that the people must unite to fight the evil that has grown in California.

30. Archetype Identification- Mentors.-Passage-Ch. 26, p. 445. ?Jim Casey is Tom?smentor he explains what is happening in the society.? Interpretation. – Tom then uses theknowledge to further the reverends cause. Tom then retreats to the wilderness and alsofinds that he is a small part of one giant soul of all men.

31. Archetype Identification- Rain.-Passage- Ch. 28, p. 532. ?Over her head a plumpblack cloud grew shading the stars.? Interpretation.-A great change is going to occur withthe rain, a rebirth of ideas and people. The rain will destroy old values and replace themwith new.

32. Archetype Identification. River.- Passage Ch. 30, Pg. 564. ? The men try to build adam to stop the flow of water and to save their families from the flood.? Interpretation-The men are trying to stop the cycle of life, they give all there strength but it still does notkeep the stream from flowing the way it wants to flow, so no matter how hard the men trythey can not alter the cycle of life.
