Oedipus is a blind old man. He is the son of a former king of Thebes. His father?s name was Laius and his mother was Jocasta, the former queen. In the previous tragedy, Oedipus inadvertently killed his father and married his mother. He had four kids with his wife. Moreover, his wife/mother was going through a lot of stress so she decided to hang herself. The rest of the characters in Oedipus at Colonus are: Antigone, Ismene, Creon, Polynices, a stranger, the chorus, a messenger, and Theseus. Antigone and Ismene are important because they are the daughters of Oedipus. Creon is also important because he is involved in one of the conflicts in the story. Polynices is important in the book because after the pain he has caused his father he has come back to see him. The messenger and the stranger are important because they do favors for Oedipus. Theseus plays a major part in this story because he helps out Oedipus.
